What the client needed
EnDev Kenya, implemented by GIZ and SNV since 2006, promotes improved cookstoves, solar solutions and biogas through market-based delivery. One of its indicators tracks the share of micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) able to make informed decisions about investing in climate-friendly energy for productive use.
A 2021 baseline had put this at 69%, against a 2025 target of 86%. GIZ needed endline data from the areas where it had run awareness and behaviour change campaigns.
How M31 Research delivered
M31 Research refined and digitised the questionnaire in KoboToolbox, covering demographics, awareness of clean energy technologies and investment decisions. Enumerators were trained virtually on ethics, GPS use and the digital tools.
Our team interviewed MSMEs and farming households door to door and in markets across four sub-counties of Kisumu and Siaya. Real-time supervision, built-in logic checks, geo-tagging and daily debriefs kept quality high, followed by structured data cleaning.

- Interviews in four sub-counties
- Daily supervision and remote monitoring
- Cleaned dataset and field report
What changed for the client
The survey reached 116 respondents, above the target of 100, and the final dataset met GIZ's quality standards. It showed high awareness of clean energy technologies among MSMEs, with most respondents actively involved in investment decisions, contributing evidence to EnDev Kenya's results reporting and future programming.
